Leaving our little desert haven at the crack of dawn we were well rested as we prepared for a hardcore day on the road. Even after doing a lot of Googling there were no fun stops to be found on this 11 hour drive.
Though not the most exciting road, the hours past quickly with the help of podcasts to keep us entertained. That day’s choice was RuPaul’s “What’s The T?”, which was a little more light hearted than my usual murder picks.
As we came over one of the twisting raised roads, Austin appeared glowing and glassy and my heart jumped with excitement – sometimes you just get a good feeling about a place, right?
We were staying in an airstream and I could not wait to see our vintage camper. Parking up in a quiet street in East Austin we were easily guided to the yard as the gate was lit up with multi coloured string of lights. The yard had two other caravans, a fire pit and chickens, but the centrepiece of our perfect hippy hideout was definitely our airstream. The camper was even better than I expected, every detail had been thought out; I loved it so much that part of me did not want to leave but I managed to peel myself away from our Airbnb for a sandwich and couple of pints at one of the many local bars.
Having only being in Austin a few hours I had a feeling that the city had been well worth the long drive.
